The bassbar
The bassbar is a kind of spring that should be replaced with a new one after a certain period of time. Some makers consider that the lifespan of a bassbar should not exceed 30 years, but I personally believe that if the arching is showing good resistance to the pressure of the strings, and the sound satisfies the musician, then it is preferable to leave the instrument in peace!
The maker must decide if renewing the bassbar would restore strength to the soundboard. This key instrument part is of crucial importance for the sound qualities of the instrument. Its adjustment is performed using chalk and a small flat plane.
